There must be some kind of horse gene that runs in my family, because it was definitely passed down to my cousin Beth and I! Some of my first memories involve riding Beth’s horses in New Jersey. Beth has a wonderful Quarter Horse named Renny who she shows both western and english. In May, we decided to do portraits of the two of them and I couldn’t be more in love with the results!
Renny seems to be one of the most patient horses I have ever met. He has the typical Quarter Horse attitude and just takes everything in stride, despite all the crazy things Beth and I came up with during our shoot! Including, but not limited to, sitting on him sidesaddle in the middle of the field and having him stand halter-less in the driveway.
Beth’s boyfriend Kurt came along as the official groom/trailer driver/horse-attention-getter. We also persuaded him to get in on a few photo ops with us!
I wish every shoot I do could have this beautiful light! Beth’s session is a great example of how shooting later in the day produces such great images. If you haven’t read my blog post about the best time to shoot, you can find it here!
Thank you to Beth, Kurt and Renny for being such great models! If you would like to learn more about having an equine portrait session of your own, visit my website melissagebert.com. Be sure to follow MGP on Facebook and Instagram for even more updates and photos!
